Oceanside is a coastal city located in southern California. It is included in San Diego County and forms a tri-city area with Carlsbad and Vista. Approximately 168,000 people call Oceanside home and they, along with many tourists, enjoy the warm and sunny climate for which California is famous year round.

A Brief History

Oceanside was first discovered by European explorers around 1769, though it was inhabited by native Americans long before that. Over the next century, the area that would become Oceanside belonged to Spain, then Mexico, and finally the United States in 1848. The city was officially incorporated in 1888. In 1942, the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton was built in Oceanside, which spurred a large population increase.

Oceanside Today

These days, Oceanside is known for its excellent beach access. The Oceanside Pier is one of the longest wooden piers on the west coast and is in its 6th reiteration since its initial construction in 1888. The California Surf Museum is also located in the city. Annual events include the kick-off to the 3,000 mile bicycle race called Race Across America and the the Beach Soccer Championships.
